The Perfect 10-Day Brazil Itinerary for First-Timers
Rio, Iguaçu Falls and a slice of paradise — a realistic 10-day route with timings, transport and what to book in advance.

Brazil is bigger than the continental United States. The most common first-trip mistake is trying to see everything — and spending half of it in airports. This route keeps things realistic: three bases, two flights, zero burnout.

The route at a glance
| Days | Where | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | Rio de Janeiro | Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf, beaches, samba |
| 5–7 | Paraty / Ilha Grande | Colonial town, islands, waterfalls |
| 8–10 | Foz do Iguaçu | Iguaçu Falls from both sides, bird park |
Days 1–4: Rio de Janeiro
Day 1 — Arrive and slow down. Check in to Ipanema or Copacabana, walk the beach promenade, have a coconut and watch the sunset from Arpoador rock. That applause you hear? Cariocas clap for the sunset.
Day 2 — The icons. Go to Christ the Redeemer early (before 9am) to beat the crowds and clouds. In the afternoon, take the cable car up Sugarloaf for sunset.
Day 3 — Local Rio. Explore Santa Teresa's hills, the Selarón Steps and downtown's historic center. At night, go to a samba spot in Lapa or a roda de samba.
Day 4 — Nature. Hike Dois Irmãos or Pedra Bonita with a guide for the best views in the city, then spend the afternoon on the beach in Leblon.

Days 5–7: Paraty or Ilha Grande
Both are about 3–4 hours from Rio by transfer. Pick one:
- Paraty — a beautifully preserved colonial town with cobblestone streets, boat trips to hidden beaches and waterfalls in the Atlantic Forest.
- Ilha Grande — a car-free island with jungle trails and Lopes Mendes, one of Brazil's most beautiful beaches.
Days 8–10: Foz do Iguaçu
Fly back via Rio to Foz do Iguaçu. The falls are one of the natural wonders of the world: around 275 waterfalls on the border of Brazil and Argentina.
Day 8: Brazilian side — the panoramic view and the walkway into the spray of the Devil's Throat. Day 9: Argentine side — closer to the falls, more walking; bring your passport. Day 10: Parque das Aves (bird park) in the morning, then fly home.

FAQ
When is the best time to visit?
For Rio and the coast, April–June and August–October offer good weather and fewer crowds. December to March is hot, lively and more expensive; Carnival dates sell out months ahead.
Can I add the Amazon?
Yes, but it needs at least 3–4 extra days. Fly to Manaus and join a lodge trip — it's a separate adventure.
Is 10 days enough for Brazil?
It's enough for a fantastic first trip focused on the southeast. You'll want to come back — everyone does.
