Beaches, a low cost of living compared to the US or Europe, time zones that overlap with both... It's no wonder Brazil has become one of the most popular destinations for remote workers. Since 2022, Brazil has had an official digital nomad visa that lets you live here legally while working for clients or employers abroad.

Who can apply?

The visa is designed for people who work remotely for a company or clients outside of Brazil. You can't use it to work for Brazilian companies. In general you need to prove one of the following:

  • A monthly income from abroad of at least US$ 1,500, or
  • Available funds of at least US$ 18,000 in a bank account.
Always double-checkVisa rules and amounts can change. Before applying, confirm the current requirements with the Brazilian consulate responsible for your country.

How long does it last?

The visa is initially granted for up to one year and can be renewed for another year. After arriving, you register with the Federal Police to get your residence registration.

Documents checklist

  • Valid passport
  • Proof of remote work: employment contract or service contracts with foreign clients
  • Proof of income or bank statements for the required amounts
  • Criminal record certificate from your country (usually legalized/apostilled)
  • Health insurance valid in Brazil for the period of stay
  • Visa application form and photo

Health insurance is a requirement, so sort it out early. Nomad-focused insurance is often the simplest option.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Gather your documents and get translations/apostilles where required.
  2. Apply through the Brazilian consulate responsible for where you live (most now use an online system).
  3. Wait for approval — timing varies by consulate.
  4. Enter Brazil and register with the Federal Police within the deadline (usually 90 days).
  5. Get your CPF if you don't have one yet — you'll need it for everything.
