Florianópolis Travel Guide: Best Beaches, Where to Stay and Life as a Digital Nomad
A local's guide to Floripa: which beaches are for surfing, families or parties, the best neighborhoods to stay in, getting around the island, and why nomads love it.

Florianópolis, or Floripa, is the capital of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. Most of the city sits on an island about 54 km long, connected to the mainland by bridges, with more than 40 beaches, lagoons, dunes and green hills. It's safer and calmer than most Brazilian capitals, which is why so many Brazilians and foreign remote workers end up moving here.

Which beach for what
| Beach | Best for |
|---|---|
| Campeche | Clear water, long walks, boat trips to Campeche Island |
| Joaquina | Surf and sandboarding on the dunes behind it |
| Praia Mole | Surf, a young crowd and sunset drinks |
| Lagoinha do Leste | A wild beach you reach by a 1 to 2 hour hike |
| Jurerê Internacional | Beach clubs, mansions and summer parties |
| Canasvieiras and Ingleses | Calm water for families, and lots of Argentine tourists in summer |
| Santo Antônio de Lisboa | No swimming beach, but fresh oysters at sunset |
The ocean on the east coast is cold and has strong currents. Swim where there are lifeguards (look for the red flags that mark danger zones).
Where to stay
- Lagoa da Conceição: the heart of the island, between the lagoon and the dunes, with restaurants, bars, coworkings and quick access to Joaquina and Praia Mole. Our pick for most visitors.
- Campeche: beach life in the south, popular with nomads and families. Quieter at night.
- Centro and the Beira-Mar: practical for a short stay, with shops, the waterfront and the Hercílio Luz bridge, but away from the beaches.
- The north (Jurerê, Canasvieiras): resort-style, best in summer.
Getting around
The island is bigger than it looks, and the roads get very slow in summer, especially at the bridge and around Lagoa. Uber works well. The city buses go everywhere but involve connections at terminals. If you're staying a week or more, renting a car or a scooter makes beach-hopping much easier. Avoid driving to or from the island at rush hour.
When to go
- December to March: high season. Hot, lively and crowded, with higher prices and traffic. Book early for New Year and Carnival.
- April, May, October, November: our favourite. Warm days, fewer people, lower prices.
- June to August: winter. Days can be cool (around 13 to 20 °C), the sea is cold and some beach restaurants close. Great time for surfing, hiking and whale watching on the coast south of the island, where southern right whales come between July and November.
What to eat
Floripa is Brazil's oyster capital. Go to Ribeirão da Ilha or Santo Antônio de Lisboa and order them raw, gratinated or steamed. Also try sequência de camarão, a set menu of shrimp served in every way imaginable, and the local fish dishes influenced by the Azorean immigrants who settled the island.
Floripa for digital nomads
Fibre internet is widespread, there are coworkings in Lagoa, Campeche and the center, and the city has a strong tech scene. Rents are high by Brazilian standards and jump in summer, so look for monthly rentals from March to November. If you plan to stay longer than a tourist visit allows, read our guide to the Brazil digital nomad visa, and get a CPF early: you'll need it for almost everything.
Is Florianópolis safe?
It's one of the safest state capitals in Brazil, but not crime-free. Don't leave belongings on the beach while you swim, don't leave anything visible in a rented car, and use the same common sense you would in any city at night.
